Why pasted bold keeps disappearing
Every app stores text as characters plus optional formatting. When you bold a word inside Instagram or WhatsApp, the app saves a note that says “this run is bold” — and that note is dropped the moment the text leaves the app. Paste it into a plain field and the word arrives flat.
The rows above do not send a formatting note. They send different characters: 𝐛 is not a styled b, it is a separate code point from the Mathematical Bold block. There is nothing to lose, which is why it survives the trip through a clipboard, a text message or a name field.
Serif bold or sans bold?
The two heavy weights on the page are not the same shape. 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟 bold has the little feet and comes from the maths alphabet, so it reads formal — the look of a printed heading. 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘀 bold has no feet and reads like a thick phone keyboard.
- Serif bold for names, titles and anything that should look engraved.
- Sans bold for captions and quick emphasis, especially on small screens.
- Double-struck (𝔹𝕠𝕝𝕕) when you want the outline look instead of pure weight.
Where bold already exists, and where you need it
WhatsApp, Telegram and Slack understand their own marker characters, and on those you are better off typing them than pasting Unicode: they stay searchable and a screen reader still reads them as words. Bold Unicode is for the places that have no bold button at all — Instagram bios, usernames, TikTok captions, Discord nicknames, YouTube channel names.
The limits nobody mentions
Bold characters are still one character each, so they do not save space — but they do cost compatibility. Older Android builds and a few email clients ship fonts without the maths block and will show an empty box for every letter. A screen reader also reads them letter by letter rather than as a word, so keep bold to names and labels, not to full sentences people need to understand.
